A complex narrative of three layers which examines the nature of truth and storytelling, with the drive of a thriller. Laura Chase's older sister Iris, married at eighteen to a politically prominent industrialist, is now poor and eighty-two, reflecting on her life, in particular the events surrounding her sister's tragic death. Chief among these was the publication of The Blind Assassin, a novel which earned the dead Laura Chase a devoted cult following. It describes an affair between a wealthy young woman and a man on the run. During their secret meetings, the lovers concoct a pulp fantasy set on Planet Zycron. As the invented story twists through love and sacrifice and betrayal, so does the real one; while events in both move closer to war and catastrophe.

Winner of the 2000 Booker Prize and the 2001 Hammett Prize. Nominated for the 2001 Orange Prize and the International 2000 IMPAC Dublin Literary Prize. Time Magazine named the novel the best of 2000 and included it in a list of 100 greatest English language novels since 1923.
