Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, from Pondicherry, is a philosophical and spiritual child, whose resources are severely tested when he and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker are the sole survivors of a shipwreck. They survive for almost eight months drifting in the Pacific Ocean, with Pi at one end of their precarious raft, and Richard Parker at the other.

The award winning 2012 film Life of Pi, directed by Ang Lee, based on an adapted screenplay by David Magee, stars Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Gerard Depardieu, Tabu and Adil Hussain.
